1597 The first European that step foot on Indonesia was Marco Polo on 1292, but the first one to step foot on Bali was Cornelis de Houtman at 1597. Cornelis de Houtman was a Dutch explorer and would later be the one to aid the Dutch in taking over Indonesia. 1906 On September 14, 1906 the Dutch started to gain control of Bali even though they doesn’t establish the colonialism that well. Their colonialism stopped when the Japanese came and took their place.

1942 After going through several battles, the Japanese army landed on Sanur beach on 18 and 19 February 1942. From the Sanur beach the Japanese army entered Denpasar without encountering any resistance whatsoever. Then from Denpasar, Japan controlled Bali entirely. At first, the party that established Japanese power in Bali was the Japanese army (Rikung). 1942 Japanese step foot in Bali at 1942, establishing the second colonialism in Bali. During that time I Gusti Ngurah Rai was the Lieutenant Colonel of Indonesia. He leads his army to battle. One of the battle he fought in was called the Battle of Margarana. After 3 years of fighting, the Japanese had a retreat because of the bombing that happened in their capital.

1945 Not long after, President Soekarno proclaimed the Independence of Indonesia on 17 August 1945. Because of that war, I Gusti Ngurah Rai was awarded as a national hero. And to honor him, the international airport in Bali was named after him.
